Veterinary Technology

If you want to combine your compassion for animals with your love of science and technology, Morehead State University’s Veterinary Technology Program can help you have an amazing college experience and a promising career.
MSU’s Veterinary Technology program offers both associate and bachelor degree programs and will give you the opportunity to learn various aspects of veterinary medicine and veterinary technology through courses covering a wide range of topics. Classwork is combined with hands-on training to give you the confidence and preparation to apply what you’ve learned in the field.

The Veterinary Technology program allows you the flexibility to pursue the degree to best suit your goals. You can earn an associate degree in three years and go into private practice as a veterinary technician.
With a bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology from MSU, you will be on the frontlines of veterinary medicine, performing many of the daily duties of licensed veterinarians. This degree will prepare you for positions as a researcher for a pharmaceutical company, a vet tech for a college of veterinary medicine or a number of positions at agencies like the USDA and Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

If you choose our four-year bachelor degree program, you have the flexibility to specialize in a specific species of animal or  veterinary discipline, including:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Clinical pathology
  • Dentistry
  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Surgical assistance

Students in our veterinary technology program take classes on the expansive 350 acres of the Derrickson Agricultural Complex. The facility houses 40 horses, 150 cows, a unit of 60 sows and swine, 40 sheep and fully functional small animal and equine hospitals. Here, vet techs will get top priority when working with and studying animals up close. In addition, you will be required to take a semester-long practicum and courses where you manage a laboratory under University supervision to give you the ability to hit the ground running when you start your career in veterinary technology.
