They need technical assistance in obtaining financing, writing a business plan, navigating governmental bureaucracies, and accessing business development assistance. Many businesses need advice on intellectual property, marketing, legal issues, and more.
At times a new business needs to simply learn from scratch about the basics of running a business. This is particularly true for start-ups that want to commercialize technologies. The West Liberty Area Innovation Center (IC) provides this assistance to start-ups who locate at the Morgan County Regional Technology Center.
The Area Innovation Center was opened in May 2004 to address the shortcoming in the region's technology and innovation based business sector. Since that time the Center has assisted its clients raise more than $250,000 in developing their new enterprises. In addition to helping its clients access critical financing, the IC has also helped identify patent attorney's, prepare and evaluate business plans, identify potential partners, comply with governmental regulations, and develop web sites.
The Center has worked to create an Information Technology cluster in the Morgan County/Morehead area. More recently, the Innovation Center has developed a partnership with the Morehead State University Space Science Center http://ssc.moreheadstate.edu/ to identify and assist companies wishing to commercialize technologies in the following fields: homeland security, defense, aviation, satellite technology, radio frequency technology, and mine safety identification devices.
