The MSUCorps has been at Morehead State University since 1994 with more than 640 members serving. The mission of our program is to increase the educational success of high risk school-age children and youth by providing math and reading tutoring and coordinated direct services to these students. Our members also strengthen community partnerships by recruiting volunteers to provide tutoring and mentoring support as well as other school and community identified services. Additionally, members participate in community service as well as take part in national service projects.MSUCorps members see tangible outcomes and learn first hand how their contributions can change their very own community. The MSUCorps program has a full-time Project Director (Mary Claire Williams), Program Assistant (Carie Kizziar), and an in office Part-Time Program Assistant (Julia Clay). This program is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Currently the MSUCorps program has 33members serving in K-12 schools throughout MSU’s service region (Carter, Boyd, Greenup, Lawrence, Morgan, Clark, Bath, and Bourbon.). To be an MSUCorps members is you must be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or a GED and either 48 hours of college credit or pass the para-educator exam. The individuals who serve in the program must provide 1700 hours of service in exchange for a living allowance, free health benefits and an education award. - AmeriCorps is building a powerful pipeline for public servants, civic leaders, and social entrepreneurs, finds a new longitudinal study released by the Corporation for National and Community Service.AmeriCorps has a significant positive impact on members’ attachment to community, their understanding of community problems, their sense of efficacy in working to address community needs, and their participation in community meetings and events.
