May Events/ Announcements

  • The Troubadour Concert Series presents The Time Jumpers, featuring Vince Gill and Ranger Doug, at the Lexington Opera House at 7:30pm on Tuesday, May 14th. Reserved seat tickets are priced from $46.00 dollars to $56.00 dollars. 
  • Community Hospice in Ashland is looking for volunteers and will hold a volunteer organization meeting from May 14th through the 16th. Sessions run from 10am to 4pm at their office located at 1480 Carter Avenue in Ashland. More information at 606-329-1890 or at 1-800-926-6184.

  • A free “end of school” outdoor concert will be held at the Moonlight Stage on First Street in Morehead from 7pm to 10pm on Wednesday, May 15th. Music provided by The Sisters and featuring Grace Rogers and Elizabeth Bowman. Refreshments will be sold and the community is invited.

  • The MSU Small Business Development Center will host the Northeast Kentucky Small Business Awards Breakfast from 8am to 9:30am on Thursday, May 16th. The event will take place at Advance Memorial United Methodist Church in Flatwoods. Cost is $15.00 dollars person and reservations are recommended. More details at 606-329-8011.

  • The Carter County Poetry Society presents “This Ordinary Life,” a program of poetry, music and photos inspired by life in eastern Kentucky. The event takes place at 7pm on Friday, May 17th at the Rowan County Arts Center on Main Street in Morehead. The event is free and open to the community.   • Rowan Unite will present the annual “Run Away From Drugs 5-K Run/Walk” on Saturday, May 18th. The event will take place at the Morehead-Rowan County Clyde Thomas Regional Airport.   • First Church of God in Morehead will host a gospel music concert from 5pm to 7pm on Saturday, May 18th. Concessions will be available including hot dogs, coleslaw, chips, soda and brownies. Proceeds will benefit Rowan County Christmas.

  • The Bob Thompson Unit will perform as part of the Jazz Alley Series at the Paramount Arts Center at 8pm on Saturday, May 18th.   • The Sue Belle Slam Relay For Life Volleyball Tournament will be held on Saturday, May 18th at Rowan County Middle and High Schools. Open games begin at 9am and the tournament bracket begins at noon. Cost is $25.00 dollars per person. This is a co-ed tournament and teams will consist of a minimum of two men and two women on the court at all times. Proceeds benefit Rowan County’s Relay For Life Foundation.

  • The Rowan County High School Girls Basketball Camp will be held at the Rowan County High School from 1pm to 4pm on May 20th through May 23rd. Early registration is $45.00 dollars or $55.00 dollars on the first day of camp. The camp is open to girls in grades one through nine.   • Photos, memorabilia and books of Jesse Stuart will be on display at the newly renovated Greenup City Hall. A ceremony to unveil a display will take place at 11am on Tuesday, May 21st. Light refreshments will be served and the community is invited to attend. More information at 606-326-1667.

  • The mobile pantry with the Huntington Area Food Bank will be set-up at the Wal-Mart in Louisa on Thursday, May 23rd. Registration begins at 9am and distribution of food begins at 10am. More information at 304-523-6029.

  • The Elliott County Cooperative Extension Office will host “Pickin’ On The Porch” at the Laurel Gorge Cultural Heritage Center at 6pm on Saturday, May 25th. Music provided by Hammertowne, the Dewey Smith Band, Jack Smith Band and East Kentucky Blue. Concessions will be available.   • The Regional Readers’ Book Group will meet at 5:45pm on Tuesday, May 28th at the Jesse Stuart Foundation in Ashland. The group will discuss “Above The Slate – An Appalachian Love Story” by Lou Martin. The community is invited to attend and new members are always welcome. Additional information at 606-326-1667.

June Events/ Announcements

  • The Rowan County Arts Center will host a Youth Illustration Art Class from 9:30am to 11:30am on Saturday, June 1st. Materials will be provided and space is limited. Cost is $15.00 dollars per person and children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.   • The Cave Run Kids Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, June 1st at the Minor Clark Fish Hatchery near Cave Run Lake. Registration begins at 6:30am with fishing from 7am to 11am. Designed for children ages 1 to 15, there will be free fishing, food, prizes, casting contest, game and more. Bait and fishing poles will be available.

  • The Kentucky Surface Design Associates will conduct a mini-conference in conjunction with the exhibit “Stitch Plus 7: Contemporary Textile Art from Kentucky and Surrounding States.” The event will take place from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, June 1st. Following the conference, an opening reception for the exhibit will be held from 3pm to 5pm in the Claypool-Young Art Gallery at Morehead State University.   • Applications are now accepted for the New Opportunity School for Women, June 2nd through 22nd in Berea. The school seeks motivated women over thirty years of age for classes in building self-esteem, computer basics, leadership development, self-defense and understanding violence against women. Classes involve guest speakers, field trips, job skills and more. Participants will intern in their field of interest with lodging and meals provided.   • The 6th Annual Louisville Festival of the Arts at the Summit will take place June 8th and 9th from 10am to 5pm both days.   • An Eastern Kentucky Veterans Expo will be held on Friday, June 14th at Boyd County Middle School. Open to all military veterans and their spouses, services will include a career fair, training and education resources, medical screening, veteran’s benefits, community resources and more. Lunch will be provided. The event is free and available to all veterans.

  • The Steve Snyder and Friends will perform as part of the Jazz Alley Series at the Paramount Arts Center at 8pm on Friday, July 5th.   • Space Trek is a one-week educational experience in space science for girls entering their junior or senior year of high school. Space Trek will take place July 13th through 20th at MSU’s Space Science Center. Cost is $250.00 dollars and scholarships are available.   • The Paramount Arts Center in Ashland will present nearly 30 summer camps for children through July 19th. Summer camp themes include acting, singing, dancing, modeling and more.   • The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea is celebrating their 10th anniversary through August 24th.
