May Events/ Announcements

  • Rowan Unite is collecting donated items to benefit tornado victims in Oklahoma and the mid-west. Donations may be dropped-off between 8am and 4pm at the Rowan Unite office located in the Old Middle School Principal Office on Flemingsburg Road in Morehead.   • The Morehead Police Department reminds motorists to drive smart and stay sober behind the wheel. During the month of June, sobriety checkpoints will be held in various locations and times throughout the city.

  • The mobile pantry with the Huntington Area Food Bank will be set-up at the Wal-Mart in Louisa on Thursday, May 23rd. Registration begins at 9am and distribution of food begins at 10am. More information at 304-523-6029.

  • The Elliott County Cooperative Extension Office will host “Pickin’ On The Porch” at the Laurel Gorge Cultural Heritage Center at 6pm on Saturday, May 25th. Music provided by Hammertowne, the Dewey Smith Band, Jack Smith Band and East Kentucky Blue. Concessions will be available. Admission is free and donations accepted to benefit the Laurel Gorge Cultural Heritage Center. More details at 606-738-5543.

  • The Laurel Gorge Heritage Center will feature the creative art of fiber artist Linda Johnson during a reception on Saturday, May 25th from 1pm to 4pm. Dolls, jewelry, animal caricatures and other items will be on display.

  • The Regional Readers’ Book Group will meet at 5:45pm on Tuesday, May 28th at the Jesse Stuart Foundation in Ashland. The group will discuss “Above The Slate – An Appalachian Love Story” by Lou Martin. The community is invited to attend and new members are always welcome. Additional information at 606-326-1667.

  • The Kentucky River Water Trail Alliance will host their annual conference at the Capital Plaza Hotel in Frankfort on Friday, May 31st. Registration begins at 9:30am with several guest speakers scheduled throughout the day. More information at 800-960-7200.

June Events/ Announcements

  • “Voice and Visions of Women of the Mountains,” a Fuse The Muse project of stories and photography, will be on display at the Rowan County Arts Center through June 30th. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, June 1st from 2pm to 4pm. The event is free and open to the public.   • The Waterkeeper Alliance presents the “Kentucky River Splash” at Riverview Park in Frankfort on Saturday, June 1st. Registration begins at 9:30am with kayak and canoe races from 10am to 3pm.   • The Rowan County Arts Center will host a Youth Illustration Art Class from 9:30am to 11:30am on Saturday, June 1st. Materials will be provided and space is limited. Cost is $15.00 dollars per person and children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.   • The Cave Run Kids Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, June 1st at the Minor Clark Fish Hatchery near Cave Run Lake. Registration begins at 6:30am with fishing from 7am to 11am. Designed for children ages 1 to 15, there will be free fishing, food, prizes, casting contest, game and more. Bait and fishing poles will be available.

  • The Kentucky Surface Design Associates will conduct a mini-conference in conjunction with the exhibit “Stitch Plus 7: Contemporary Textile Art from Kentucky and Surrounding States.” The event will take place from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, June 1st. Following the conference, an opening reception for the exhibit will be held from 3pm to 5pm in the Claypool-Young Art Gallery at Morehead State University.   • The Carter County Relay For Life Team will hold a fundraising event on Saturday, June 1st at The Chicken Coop on Kentucky Highway 19. Music begins at 5pm with Southern Rail, Hung Jury, Rowan County Ramblers and more. Concessions, corn hole and other activities will be available. Bring your lawn chairs. Admission is free and donations will be accepted.

  • Applications are now accepted for the New Opportunity School for Women, June 2nd through 22nd in Berea. The school seeks motivated women over thirty years of age for classes in building self-esteem, computer basics, leadership development, self-defense and understanding violence against women. Classes involve guest speakers, field trips, job skills and more. Participants will intern in their field of interest with lodging and meals provided.   • The Rowan County Caring and Sharing Alzheimer’s Support Group will meet at 6pm on Monday, June 3rd on the First Floor of the Center for Health, Education and Research in Morehead. Caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s or a related disorder are invited to attend. Attendees will receive education, support and new information about care giving issues.   • The Fleming County Museum Society and Muse Makers of Fleming County will present “Thinking Outside The Book” at Banana Tree Studios in Flemingsburg. Folk Art by The Coopers will be on display. The event takes place from 5pm to 8pm on Friday, June 7th.

  • The 6th Annual Louisville Festival of the Arts at the Summit will take place June 8th and 9th from 10am to 5pm both days.   • An Eastern Kentucky Veterans Expo will be held on Friday, June 14th at Boyd County Middle School. Open to all military veterans and their spouses, services will include a career fair, training and education resources, medical screening, veteran’s benefits, community resources and more. Lunch will be provided. The event is free and available to all veterans.

  • The Steve Snyder and Friends will perform as part of the Jazz Alley Series at the Paramount Arts Center at 8pm on Friday, July 5th.   • Space Trek is a one-week educational experience in space science for girls entering their junior or senior year of high school. Space Trek will take place July 13th through 20th at MSU’s Space Science Center. Cost is $250.00 dollars and scholarships are available.   • The Paramount Arts Center in Ashland will present nearly 30 summer camps for children through July 19th. Summer camp themes include acting, singing, dancing, modeling and more.
