Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education

The Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education provides initial certification programs for undergraduate and graduate students who want to teach in public middle and high schools.

We offer these undergraduate degree programs:

As you work towards your dream of teaching you will pursue intensive studies in two separate content disciplines (teacher education courses and the content discipline you wish to teach).

You may choose to teach in one of the following certification areas:

  • Agriculture
  • Art
  • Biology
  • Business
  • Chemistry
  • English/language arts
  • Health
  • Mathematics
  • Music
  • Physics
  • Social studies
  • English
  • Spanish

If you are a professional who has earned an undergraduate degree and would like to attain teacher certification and a graduate degree, visit our Master of Arts in Teaching page. You will work with our department in addition to other departments across the College of Education and will be provided with an advisor in each department. Visit our Advising Center page.

Giving You the Field Experience You Need

Our students are immersed in research on effective classroom teaching and pursue coursework in the following:

  • Human growth and development
  • Learning theories, assessment and diversity
  • Educational methods and technology
  • Classroom organization and management.

Extensive field experiences will accompany all of your instructional methods classes. Students complete 200 hours of field experience before their final semester of student teaching begins.

During your semester of student teaching you will have the chance to work under experienced educators who will mentor you and provide you with feedback to improve your skills. The experience you earn with us will prepare you professionally to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds who have a wide variety of needs.
