Morehead State University has been in Breathitt County for over 30 years, with a permanent presence by since 1996. In 2003, MSU at Jackson moved into the Breathitt County Life Skills Center.
Historically the academic focus was graduate teacher education coursework to offset the commute to Morehead; however, by the late 1990s, MSU began offering undergraduate courses in leading to degrees in elementary education and university studies. In the fall of 2006, a dual certification program was introduced in elementary and special education. In the fall of 2010, the elementary education program was also converted to a site-based, professional model program at LBJ Elementary through a partnershipe with the Breathitt County Board of Education.
During this same period, MSU became a charter partner of The University Center of the Mountains thereby extending its visibility and presence in the outermost counties of southeastern Kentucky. Programs that were added in Hazard include middle grades education and university studies.
Morehead State University at Jackson has partnered with Hazard Community and Technical College to offer the ability to complete Bachelors and Masters Degrees. You can now complete a Bachelor's degree in Education-Elementary, Middle School and Special Education, Communication Leadership and University Studies as well as minors in communication studies, criminology, general business, sociology, and psychology. We also assist and support with online degree progams. These courses are supported through face to face classes and/or distance learning through the internet or interactive television.
As the campus moves forward, its role is changing to compliment the greater-university's commitment to regional engagement and stewardship. For example, during the 2011-12 academic year, the regional campus is working to implement an Improving Educator Quality grant, which is bringing professional development to middle and high school math teachers in the service region. With the advent of more and more online programs, MSU at Jackson is also rapidly becoming a hub for student services, where exclusively online students enjoy the convenience of a regional campus close to home.
