Mechanic (Physical Plant)


Job Summary

The Mechanic is responsible for the availability of all University vehicles.  The Mechanic inspects and tests automobiles, trucks, buses, and other vehicles to determine needed repairs and to estimate costs.  The Mechanic must complete itemized work orders and perform major/minor adjustments or repairs.  The Mechanic may also remove and disassemble units such as engines or transmissions using hand and power tools.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential

  • Assures vehicles are available for use on a daily basis.
  • Performs complete engine overhaul jobs on diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Repairs electronic and computerized control systems
  • Inspects and repairs HVAC systems on vehicles.
  • Pumps gasoline and records amount of fuel used for University vehicles.
  • Overhauls manual and automatic transmissions.
  • Repairs hydraulic systems on heavy equipment.
  • Changes hoses, oil and air filters, tires, and other equipment on University vehicles.
  • Performs complete brake repairs.
  • Cleans and sanitizes vehicles.

Other

  • Performs welding services as required.
  • Performs general maintenance as needed.
  • Assists in keeping credit card log for motor pool purchases.
  • Assists in maintaining fuel inventory and stock.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Organizational Relationships

The Mechanic reports to the Motor Pool Supervisor and interacts with faculty and staff on problems regarding University vehicles.

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.  Two years of experience as a mechanic or 1000 hours of advanced training and one year experience.  Experience in diesel and gasoline engine systems.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Additional training or mechanical experience in electronic and computerized vehicle systems.

Working Conditions and Atmosphere

Overtime may be required during special events or emergencies.  Both indoor and outdoor work in all types of weather conditions.  Strenuous physical labor and heavy lifting are required.
