Vice President for University Advancement

Job Summary

The Vice President for University Advancement shall have overall responsibility for university level development and stewardship, public relations, constituent relations, communications and marketing, career services, and cultural outreach/education/preservation (in the areas of public radio, traditional music and folk art). The Vice President shall be responsible for solicitation and acknowledgement of gifts from all sources on an annual, planned and endowed basis. The Vice President also shall work with the President and other administrators of the university in the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts. The Vice President shall establish and maintain productive, continuing relationships with alumni and other friends of the university. The Vice President shall function as the Chief Executive Officer of the Morehead State University Foundation, Inc., and also be responsible for the management and oversight of the University’s alumni/constituent relations program. The Vice President shall coordinate efforts, develop strategic plans, establish accounting/audit procedures and budgets, and be responsible for the operation of the following units: Development; Alumni and Constituent Relations; Communications and Marketing; Career Services; Cultural Outreach, Preservation and Education (Kentucky Center for Traditional Music, Kentucky Folk Art Center, Morehead State Public Radio).

Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL

  • Coordinate, manage and oversee the day-to-day activities of the offices listed above.
  • Serve as Chief Executive Officer of the Morehead State University Foundation, Inc.
  • Coordinate activities of Foundation Board of Trustees, and advisory board members for folk art, traditional music, public radio, alumni association and other constituent groups.
  • Develop and manage comprehensive fund raising initiatives consistent with the University’s strategic plan to include major gifts, annual giving, and planned giving.
  • Design, direct and administer comprehensive major fundraising campaigns.
  • Coordinate planning and execution of University fundraising, stewardship and alumni events.
  • Provide counsel and advice to senior officers regarding fundraising and stewardship.
  • Provide counsel and advice to donors and prospective donors on planned giving.
  • Insure the integrity and consistency of gift acceptance policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the alumni activities of the university.
  • Direct public relations activities for the university.
  • Oversee the marketing and communications efforts of the university.
  • Oversee the career services and internship programs of the university.
  • Hire, evaluate, train and supervise the staff of all units of responsibility.
  • Maintain budget authority for the division and the foundation.
  • Implement sound accounting, investment and budgeting procedures for the division and foundation.
  • Oversee all marketing, communications, alumni and fund-raising related publications and mailings

OTHER

  • Represent Morehead State University at various functions and events.
  • Attend conferences and seminars relating to development and alumni issues.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the President of the University.

Organizational Relationships

The Vice President for University Advancement is a senior level administrator reporting directly to the President and serving as a member of the President’s Cabinet. This position interacts with the President, Board of Regents, alumni, students, faculty, staff, University administrators, benefactors, business and community leaders.

Minimum Requirements

Master’s Degree with minimum of five years of proven success in organizing comprehensive campaigns and raising funds in a non-profit setting. Must have significant experience in marketing, publications and communications. Must be proficient in word processing database management software. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary to deal effectively with others. Must have experience in the management of investment portfolios.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with extensive fund-raising experience in higher education comprehensive campaign experience, and a successful track record in major and planned giving. Preference will also be given to candidates with experience in alumni relations, communications/marketing and career services.

Working Conditions and Atmosphere

Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.  No or very limited exposure to physical risk.  No or very limited physical effort required.  Night and weekend hours and extensive periods of time off campus are commonplace.
