Wellness Center Assistant Director

Job Summary

The Wellness Center Assistant Director will assist in the management of all aspects of day to day responsibilities of the Wellness Center.

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of selected wellness programs in accordance with established protocols.
  • Responsible for staff training for fitness assessments, individualized exercise prescriptions for members and oversee initial and on-going support for the participants.
  • Assists in the training of Wellness Center staff in all areas: fitness assessments, new member orientation, general administration, employee policies and operating procedures, group leadership, emergency procedures, CPR and HBV training. 
  • Oversees the Wellness Center’s Employee Management Program including staff discipline.  Continues to develop procedures to monitor work activities of each staff member on a daily basis.
  • Supervises all intern projects and assist in the evaluations of grades.
  • Prepares and writes interest articles on wellness/fitness related topics for the Office of Human Resources Newsletter, and other on campus publications.
  • Assists in the development of all Wellness Center program scheduling.
  • Insures that all assessment, cardio, aerobic, tennis and strength training equipment is well maintained and safe for operation.  Implements the yearly equipment replacement program.  Oversees all repairs of equipment.
  • Creates and develops a Wellness Center equipment maintenance, cleaning and repair manual.
  • Creates and develops a Wellness Center emergency manual.
  • Assist with the management, development, implementation and evaluation of all wellness and assessment programs.
  • Assists with the ongoing development of operational, membership, employee and training manuals.
  • Assists with monitoring of the Wellness Center’s operational budget.
  • Assists with the Wellness Center’s yearly Unit Plan and Strategic Activities.
  • Responsible for the development of Wellness Center binder used for display during student recruitment events.
  • Coordinates and develops special Wellness Center events and activities.
  • Supervises inventory and ordering of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains supplies, controls and calibration of the cholesterol machine.
  • Responsible for emergency staff coverage.
  • Assists in the completion of work orders for maintenance and repair.
  • Assists with preparing and presenting yearly retention and usage-summarized reports to University administration regarding Wellness Center operations.
  • Responsible for the development of printed marketing and public relations materials for the University Wellness Center.
  • Attends conferences in the fitness and wellness industry for the purpose of learning new information and staying current with the field.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the University Wellness Center.
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of the equipment replacement program.
  • Directs the Annual MSU WellFest.
  • Manages the Physician’s Release system for members.
  • Conducts fitness assessments and individualized exercise prescriptions for the University Wellness Center members.
  • Conducts group and individualized wellness / fitness related programs for employees and community including smoking cessation, weight management, stress management, incentive and tennis programs, as well as other wellness related topics.
  • Responsible for generating and displaying all educational materials on the Wellness Center “topic of the month.”
  • Represents the University Wellness Center at area Health and Wellness Fairs.
  • Increases University presence in the community by participating in community outreach programs servicing Eastern Kentucky by doing: radio segments, newspaper articles, creation and maintenance of Wellness Center web page and other community outreach projects.
  • Provides wellness programs focused on university and community outreach at the University Wellness Center.


  • Receives and distributes Wellness Center mail and packages.
  • Greets and directs faculty, students, staff and general public as needed.
  • Maintains office and personnel files and updates records.
  • Supervises the operation and maintenance of all office equipment.
  • Reviews and answers routine memos and correspondence under own signature and / or at the permission of the Director or Chair.
  • Attends workshops for the purpose of learning new programs added to the Datatel System.
  • Responsible for securing list of graduating students from Office of the Registrar for file purging purposes each semester.
  • Responsible for the updating of the Wellness Center display board.    
  • Other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned by Director.

Organizational Relationships

The Assistant Wellness Director reports to the Wellness Director.  The position interacts with MSU faculty, staff and students as well as the community.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or related field from an accredited institution.  Experience in community, corporate, commercial, clinical or University health / fitness facility.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Master's Degree.  Previous work experience with fitness assessments and individualized exercise prescription.  ACSM and CPR certification desired, as well as bookkeeping skills.

Working Conditions and Atmosphere

Must be flexible to meet the needs of various work schedules and hours may fluctuate based on priority of deadlines and workload.   Some pressures may be expected on the job due to interruptions and frequency of visitors, callers and job deadlines.  Overtime may be required during emergencies.
