New Public History Area of Concentration and Minor

Public history is a rapidly growing field with jobs in all level of government, conservation, law, nonprofit and civil service sectors.

The new public history area of concentration at MSU is the first undergraduate program of its kind offered in Kentucky. This non-teaching degree path permits you to explore your interests and allows you to choose from a variety of courses based on your career goals. A minor in public history is also available and provides a strong combination when paired with a number of majors in other fields including art, government, strategic communication, psychology, English and more.

As part of the public history program, you will complete an internship and develop a unique, portable skill set, giving you a competitive edge in the marketplace after graduation.

Hands-On Experience Opportunities

We understand employers want to hire experienced graduates. At MSU, you will participate in hands-on historical research, make presentations at regional and national conferences and will have opportunities to travel and study abroad.

You can participate in undergraduate research fellowships as early as your freshman year. You will also have opportunities to network with career professionals and volunteer locally through joining organizations like the MSU Historical Society or the Phi Alpha Theta history honor society.

Dedicated Faculty Members

You will study under active historians and researchers who are widely published in their fields of specialty and who will immerse you in the methods, theories and practices of history through personal instruction and advising.

Mark Haynes
"As time has gone on, I am ever more convinced that the grounding I received in philosophy has been the single most important element of my schooling. It has helped me to be a more critical examiner of all of the multi-leveled and often cynically conceived stuff that comes my way in Washington; it has helped me to maintain my moral compass; it has helped to give me a perspective and a sense of humor that might not otherwise be there."
