Reports:
Chair’s Report:
• Chair Chatham reminded the Senators of the absence policy for Senate meetings. If a Senator is unable to attend a meeting they should notify the Senate Chair and Secretary. If they choose another Senator to be their proxy for voting purposes, this must be communicated in writing to the Chair prior to the meeting. The Constitution states that a Senator may be removed from the Senate for three consecutive absences or five total absences. With notification to the Chair, absences for illness, professional conferences, etc., are excused.
Provost’s Report:
• Provost Hughes talked about the retention initiative. She noted that MSU had 88.8% retention of freshmen from fall to spring semesters. This number reflects students enrolled for spring, not necessarily paid or actually attending classes. MSU is also on track to meet the graduation target for spring commencement 2013.
• Provost Hughes is working on the budget request for next year. She has been and will be meeting with Deans, Chairs and heads of non-academic units in Academic Affairs.
A question and answer time followed.
Regent’s Report:
• Regent Morrison discussed budget issues in the Financial Summary & Reporting Guidelines 2011-2012. One item of concern to Regent Morrison and the Senators was the ratio of increase of the budget for Athletics compared to Academic Affairs.
• Chair Chatham will request a copy of the Financial Summary & Reporting Guidelines 2011-2012 for each Senator.
• Regents will have a retreat in February
• March 14 will be the quarterly meeting
• May 2 will be a work session
• June 6 will be a BOR meeting
