April 1, 2010
Call to Order:
Call to order: 4:15 pm, Riggle Room, ADUC
Senators Absent: Donna Baker, Teresa Ferguson, Cyndi Gibbs, Sarah Hawkins, Stephanie Johnson, Beverly McCormick, Steven Parkansky, Denise Watkins
Minutes: The minutes of March 25, 2010 were approved as submitted.
Committee Review:
Academic Policies: Will discuss Resolution on the “U” Grade
Communications: No Report
Evaluation: Met with Mike Walters regarding Baldridge Survey; Encouraged faculty to respond
Fiscal Affairs: No Report
Governance: Will provide update on Constitution
Professional Policies: No Report
Reports:
Provost’s Report: No Report – The Provost asked if there were any questions?
The Provost and the members discussed issues regarding:
· Budget concerns
· General Education courses as requirements or pre-requisites for degree program/exchange courses/double-dipping
· General Education Council Director
· College receptions at graduation
· Caps for summer courses
· Revenue-sharing model for summer school
Chair’s Report: The Chair provided the members with information regarding:
· Faculty Assessment and Courses Coordinators positions
· Changes regarding General Education Council structure/subcommittees
· Thanked the members for their work on the Constitution
· Constitution must be approved by the faculty at large and the Board of Regents
· Encouraged members to forward the revised Constitution to their colleagues
Senate Actions:
Governance: Completed revisions to Constitution; forwarded to chair who forwarded on to Senate members; will determine the method the faculty use for voting on the Constitution
Academic Policies: At the meeting on March 4, 2010, the Senate passed a motion to recommit the resolution on the “U” grade to the Academic Policies Committee with instructions to consider an alternative to the current “U” grade that will differentiate between academic failure and failure for not attending. Academic Policies discussed the resolution a second time and brought the resolution back to the Senate floor as originally submitted. The Senate discussed the resolution at length. Senator Katz called the question. Motion passed to call the question passed. Chair Berglee asked for a vote on the following resolution: Therefore be it resolved by the Faculty Senate, as the voice of the faculty with respect to academic policy and curriculum, that the grade U be hereby eliminated from the grading scale at Morehead State University. Motion passed.
New Business:
A Senator brought the following resolution to the floor. “Be it resolved that the Morehead State Faculty Senate formally requests that the Morehead State University’s President’s (Andrews) 2010 performance evaluation be made available for public inspection and archived as a record of the state.” Motion was seconded. The Senate members discussed the resolution. After discussion, Senator LaFleur moved to table the resolution. Senator Ahmadi seconded the motion. Motion failed. Senator Rathbun moved to commit the resolution to the Senate Evaluation Committee. Senator Stanley seconded the motion. Motion passed.
Announcements:
MSU Chemistry Club is raising money for the American Cancer Society by selling raffle tickets for a chance to “pie” the President and some members of the Lappin Hall faculty – “pieing” to be on April 21, 2010
Student Relay for Life on campus for the American Cancer Society – April 14, 2010, Weatherby Gym
Spaghetti supper for the American Cancer Society will be held on April 13, 2010, Button Drill Room
Laser light shows for the American Cancer Society on April 15, 2010, Space Science Center
Fundraiser “Bark in the Park” will be held for “Saving the Animals in Rowan” April 2nd and 3rd, 2010, Sonny Allen Field
International Studies Club selling “MSU Puzzle Books” for a Student Scholarship for Study Abroad
