Professional Development Activities
Summer Institute
July 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18
Hazard Technical Community College

Teachers engage in fun, hands-on games and exercises as learners so that they can effectively implement the strategies presented. This year, the workshops focus on linear equations. Developed by Making Math Magic Consultants, these strategies and activities challenge students to develop mathematical thinking skills they will need beyond grade 12.  Teachers walk away with a kit containing all the materials used during the workshop so that every activity practiced can be implemented from the first day of school.

Seasoned, experienced math teachers will guide participants through the analysis of math EPAS scores and test items and provide strategies for better preparing students for success on the tests.

Teachers will analyze and evaluate their practices, create their own personalized professional development goals to build on their strengths and address their weaknesses in the area of algebra instruction and schedule one-to-one coaching visits to address their instructional needs.

Coaching Visits
September -December 2012
The consultants conducting the summer institute will work with teachers in their classrooms to implement strategies and use hands-on materials effectively.  These visits will be linked to EPAS scores and teacher-designed coaching plans.

On-line Learning Communities
July 2012-May 2013

An interactive learning community will allow teachers to watch tutorial videos on best practices, communicate with math experts, and talk to each other about effective teaching strategies.

Enrollment

Teachers who attended the 2012 workshop, will be the first to be selected on the project.  However, a waiting list will be created for teachers from other schools who wish to apply.

All teachers participating in year 2 of project must complete the online application to register. This is a competitive process, and not all applying teachers may be selected.
