About Developmental Education @ MSU
The goal of the Developmental Education program at Morehead State University is to encourage college readiness and promote academic success for academically underprepared students.
The recruitment, admissions and testing facilities at Morehead State help ensure that incoming students are advised and placed in the appropriate level to maximize their success as University students. Our developmental program areas and academic support units provide students with the best opportunity to learn the mathematics, reading, and writing skills needed to be prepared for college level courses in those areas.
Placement Testing
Incoming students whose ACT subtest scores fall below the state College Readiness Standards (see the table below) are required to take a placement test in those areas.

Developmental Program Areas
Morehead State University provides the following developmental courses.
- ENG 090 – Developmental Writing
- For students with ACT subtest scores in English of 13 or below, and a COMPASS e-Write score of 5 or below.
- ENG 099 – Basic Writing
- For students who have completed ENG 090, have ACT subtest scores of 14 - 17, or a COMPASS e-Write score of 6 - 8.
- EDEL 096 – Strategic Reading I
- For students with ACT subtest scores in Reading of 17 or below, and a COMPASS Reading score of 76 or below.
- EDEL 097 – Strategic Reading II
- For students who have completed EDEL 096, have ACT subtest scores of 18 - 19, or a COMPASS Reading score of 77 - 84.
- MATH 090 – Pre-Algebra
- For students whose program of study does not require MATH 152 - College Algebra, and have ACT subtest scores in Math of 18 or below, a COMPASS Math score of 35 or below, or a KYOTE score of 21 or below.
- MATH 091 – Beginning Algebra
- For students who desire to take MATH 093 and have ACT subtest scores in Math of 18 or below, a COMPASS Math score of 35 or below, or a KYOTE score of 21 or below.
- MATH 093 – Intermediate Algebra
- For students whose program of study requires MATH 152 - College Algebra, and have ACT subtest scores in Math of 19, a COMPASS Math score of 36 - 40, or a KYOTE score of 22 - 26.
Summer Success Academy
Prospective students who are considering coming to Morehead State University and will need to take two or more of these courses are encouraged to attend the Summer Success Academy.
