Dr. Jane V. Fitzpatrick, a native of Hazard, brought more than 20 years of legal experience with her when she became the University's general counsel on July 1, 2001. As chief legal advisor to MSU President Wayne D. Andrews and other campus administrators, she serves as a member of the President's Cabinet and the Administrative Council.
Dr. Fitzpatrick has been a practicing lawyer since 1980, spending most of the time as partner in private practice. She also was an assistant public advocate for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and has experience in both state and federal courts at trial and appellate levels. Her special interest areas include education, employment and civil rights law.
A former adjunct instructor at the University of Kentucky College of Law, Dr. Fitzpatrick is licensed to practice in the Kentucky and U.S. Supreme courts, U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky, as well as the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
A former teacher in the Perry County schools, Dr. Fitzpatrick is an honors graduate of the University of Kentucky in secondary education and in law. She is married to MSU alumnus James Fitzpatrick, a music specialist in the Fayette County schools. They have three children.
