Center for Virtual Appalachia (CVA)

The Center for Virtual Appalachia (CVA) was created to serve as a collection of information and data about the Appalachian region and its people. Always growing, the main goal of the CVA is to help inform the people within and outside the region about the many wonderful places and faces that make us the unique area and people that we are today.  It provides an array of facts and figures about the region and documents the region's history and culture.  The CVA also provides a photo library of Appalachia and identified and provides biographies of important Appalachian authors, artists, athletes, entertainers, scientists, inventors, soldiers, and statesmen.

The Statesmanship Center

The United States requires public leaders to promote the common good and to represent the people's interests through the formulation, implementation, and adjudication of public policy that is prudent and just.  The mission of the Statesmanship Center is to study statesmanship past and present and to foster the next generation of statesmen for eastern Kentucky and beyond.  The Statesmanship Center engages in scholarship, education, and regional outreach, serving the region by conducting training and professional development opportunities for present and future government officials, non-profit leaders, and educators.

Commonwealth Security Studies Laboratory

Faculty in the DPMG have partnered with faculty in multiple disciplines at other universities in Kentucky, KY Fusion Center, KY Department of Transportation, National Institute for Hometown Security, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Department of Energy, National Geodetic Survey (NGS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Sandia National Laboratory, and BWXT Y-12, L.L.C to develop Eastern Kentucky's infrastructure and conduct a range of research on terrorism and the security of critical infrastructure in Kentucky and the United States.

IFIR is a joint undertaking of the Martin School of Public Policy and Administration at UK and of the Department of Public Management and Government at MSU.  It is dedicated to basic and applied research dealing with the relationships among governments and their organization in the federal system.  A substantial number of faculty from UK and Morehead serve as IFIR Research Fellows. Their research, as well as that of IFIR Visiting Scholars, is supported and disseminated through a workshop series and through the publication of IFIR Working Papers.  UK and Morehead students and faculty alike have been heavily involved in the approximately 35 workshop presentations and conferences hosted by IFIR.

“The history program at MSU is analytical and has given me the writing skills and tools I need to be competitive for internships and graduate school. Faculty members have always been supportive and have motivated me to expand my knowledge and experience. This summer I will be interning at the Alice Paul Institute outside of Philadelphia, where I will be working in archival studies along side authors and collaborating with curators across the state.  I am thankful the history program at MSU has prepared me for such opportunities.”
