Eric McCarty is a graduate of Berea College where he graduated with a degree in Agribusiness.  After completing his undergraduate degree, McCarty joined the work force and started working for the Institute for Regional Analysis and Public Policy (IRAPP).  He was hired as the technical support consultant and computer labs manager and worked on numerous projects that dealt with GIS and GPS technologies.  He worked on the Kentucky Height Mod project which consisted of the installation of four real-time GPS base stations in locations throughout the state, including at Reed Hall on the MSU campus.  All four sites are still active and are currently being used by surveyors and researchers throughout the Commonwealth.

Another project  McCarty worked on was the Mapping Kentucky Historical Marker project. This project dealt with the mapping of historical markers throughout the Commonwealth by giving middle school and high school students GPS units. Teachers would come to one of the many trainings conducted to instruct them on the use of the GPS units for the project.  This project concluded with almost every county in the Commonwealth having a participating school system.

Also during his time at IRAPP, McCarty completed a master's degree in adult education, emphasis in agriculture.  During this time, he conducted many trips with his sister, helping her work on her dissertation about the agricultural burning issues in the southeast and the effects on air quality.

McCarty is currently working for the Department of Science and Technology as the multimedia laboratory coordinator/IT specialist.  In this current position, McCarty helps in the day-to-day operations of the Center for Health and Education Research (CHER) building.  He maintains the multimedia lab/testing center and works with technology issues that arise throughout the building.  He helps the simulation coordinator with simulation procedures that help students prepare for real-world situations.

In his spare time, McCarty has a working farm he manages with his wife.  He continues to research ways Kentucky farmers can use new technologies to become more profitable.  He is a member of AQHA, National Cattleman’s Association, and the ABEL board for Rowan County.  He also enjoys the occasional hunting and fishing outing.
