Carla Aagaard is a graduate of La Sierra University in Riverside, Calif., where she earned a bachelor's degree in French. She is also a graduate of National Louis University in Evanston, Ill., where she earned a masters of adult education with an emphasis in teaching English as a second language.
Before completing her undergraduate education, Aagaard spent five years in Rwanda, Africa from 1966 to 1971, teaching English as a second language at a church mission-operated high school and seminary. At this school, she reorganized and set up the school library in the Dewey Decimal system. After completing her bachelor degree in French in the U.S., she returned to Africa and worked in Zaire (now Congo), teaching high school geography, art and a basic zoology course in French in a high school and seminary operated by a church mission organization near Butembo, Congo, for part of one school year. She then accepted a position as a bilingual French and English administrative secretary for the same church mission organization in Lubumbashi, Congo.
In the summer of 1980, Aagaard returned to the U.S. to further her education. She earned two business school degrees in 1980-81 in Fort Worth, Texas in executive secretarial and executive accounting. In the summer of 1981, she moved to the Chicago area to complete her master's in adult education (TESOL) at National Louis University. Aagaard worked full-time at the university as assistant to the director in the Office of Professional Publications and Educational Resources, as an administrative assistant in the Language and Minorities Resource Center, and was an administrative intern in the Graduate English as a Second Language Department. In addition, she taught English as a second language in the evenings to Japanese businessmen in downtown Chicago. She graduated in 1985 and subsequently worked for eight years in two different private California high schools as registrar, French, English, Fine Arts and English as a second language teacher. In 1993, she accepted a position as a Residence Hall Director for a university in the state of Washington. In 1999, she resigned and moved to Oregon and worked as a sales team member for Mervyn’s Department Store and substituted as a teacher’s aide in the public school system. In 2000, she accepted a position as residence hall director for a university in Northern California where she worked until summer of 2004 when she moved to Morehead to assist in the care of her elderly parents.
At MSU, Aagaard began working for Aramark in the summer of 2004 and then accepted a temporary academic departmental specialist position in the Department of Nursing in late November. She was subsequently hired as the ADS in February 2005 and assumed her current position as the department's academic counseling coordinator in February, 2006.
In her spare time, Aagaard enjoys spending time with her husband, family members and church family and friends; reading, walking for exercise, growing a late spring/summer/early fall vegetable garden, canning/freezing produce from the garden and cooking.
