Eric Thomas, a 1981 graduate of Pikeville High School, has earned degrees from both Eastern Kentucky University and MSU. Thomas holds a bachelor of science degree in law enforcement from EKU and a bachelor of science in secondary science education with an area of concentration in Earth science from MSU. Eric also has earned his master of arts in education, along with a physics-teaching minor, and a Rank I in education.

Thomas has 16 years of experience in both formal and informal education. He has taught science at both the secondary and post secondary levels, and spent three years as a regional science consultant for the Kentucky Department of Education. He has been chosen to pilot educational programs in his classroom for both NASA and the National Weather service. In 1999, Thomas was selected as 1 of 15 educators from across the nation to serve as a Cassini Educator Fellow by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to conduct educational outreach for NASA’s Cassini Mission to Saturn. In 2000, Thomas was again selected by NASA/JPL as one of 75 educators for its Solar System Educator program to train teachers to use educational materials developed in conjunction with its solar system exploration missions.

Eric has served as an instructor for both MSU and Big Sandy Community and Technical College. As the assistant director of the East Kentucky Science Center (EKSC) in Prestonsburg from 2002 to 2006, he assisted in the development and operation of the center’s planetarium and educational programs. Upon becoming the EKSC’s executive director in 2006, Thomas oversaw the operation of the EKSC and guided its progress and programs through 2009.

Thomas has served as a board member for several organizations, including the Prestonsburg Renaissance on Main Association, the Floyd County Chamber of Commerce, the MSU at Prestonsburg Advisory Board and the Kentucky Science Teachers Association. Currently, Thomas serves as past president of the Kentucky Science Teachers Association and as a member of the Morehead State Public Radio Community Advisory Board.

Thomas joined the staff at MSU's Space Science Center in May 2009 and is the director of the Star Theater. He currently resides in Prestonsburg with his wife Denise and their two cats, Sylvester and Tweetie.
