Originally from Spartanburg, S.C., Marshall Chapman, Associate Professor of Geology, earned a B.A. in Religion at The University of the South, Sewanee, concentrating in the development of Christian Theology and Old Testament. He took one geology course, his senior year. After an extra year, summer schools, and taking an odd undergraduate geology class here and there, he went to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in Geoscience. His research is in the origin and evolution of magma chambers; in particular, the chemical and mechanical processes that modify the emplacement and cooling histories of magma chambers and their influence on volcanological products. Currently, this work involves the study of plutonic and volcanic rocks within the Coastal Maine Magmatic Province, where he has led several international trips to the rocks on which he based his graduate work. He has also helped in the research of Mauna Loa, using deep-sea dredges and remotely operated vehicles to sample the lavas from the sea floor 15,000 feet below.

Dr. Chapman restores Model A and Model T Ford cars and Model AA Ford commercial vehicles from 1928. He has a house on a small island off the coast of Maine that is accessible by the Mail boat, his 1949 Lobster-boat or sea kayak. He also enjoys Aikido and plays Bluegrass banjo.
