Michelle McClave was a 1995 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing. Following her undergraduate education, she was employed at King’s Daughters Medical Center (KDMC) in Ashland for more than 13 years. She began as a staff nurse in the float pool, then progressed to the pediatric unit. She spent 10 years in the facility’s home health department in a variety of roles, including staff nurse, admissions, quality management, staff development and nursing management. In 2005, McClave returned to school at Walden University, where she developed a huge interest in distance education. She continued to work full-time in home health until attaining a position as nurse residency educator for KDMC in 2006. She redesigned the nurse residency there for Kentucky Board of Nursing required clinical internship. She successfully managed and mentored approximately 150 new graduate nurses through their initial orientation period in 2006 and 2007. Her graduate project at Walden involved the development of an online discussion board format for clinical reflection for the nurse residents. She attained her master’s of science in nursing education in 2007 and immediately came to work in the BSN program at MSU.

During her time at MSU, McClave has maintained a focus on community and chronic health, as well as transition into practice. She has taught in all levels of the BSN program, as well as in the online RN-BSN program. Recent courses taught by McClave include Chronic Alterations in Health, Introduction to Nursing Research and the advanced nursing practicum. She also teaches nursing elective courses and a general education first-year seminar. She has participated in a variety of activities such as the faculty development institute for Quality and Safety Education in Nursing (QSEN), Health Literacy Kentucky conferences, and is a certified online course reviewer for the Quality Matters Program. She has mentored several groups of research students in order to provide them with the opportunity to present in a variety of state venues, including Posters at the Capitol.
