Born in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Attended L'Ecole de L'Assomption, Chicopee, Mass.; Cathedral High School in Springfield, Mass.; University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass.

Graduated Summa cum laude from Cathedral High, B.A., magna cum laude from University of Massachusetts in Sociology Pre-Med. ; Ph.D., University of Massachusetts, dissertation, 1982, focused on Temporal Extension and Logical Force in Systems of Human Communication, an extension of CMM Theory with a special interest in these factors as manifest in unwanted repetitive patterns in close personal relationships. 

Dr. LaFleur has taught at the university level since 1973. His career started at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, then included teaching at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz, NY; at Hamilton College, Clinton, NY; at SUNY at Oswego, NY; at Syracuse University at Utica, NY; at Pace University, Pleasantville, NY; at University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, Conn. where he served as Chair, Department of Mass Communication; at Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, KY; and at Morehead State University, Morehead, KY, since 1994. Dr. LaFleur has also served as a communications consultant at the Adolfi Group, dba Communication Consultants, in Stamford, Conn., as a speechwriter for numerous candidates, and internationally as a consultant to several corporations and some non-profit organizations that sought his expertise in internal and external communications analysis and communication audits.

Research Interests include Inoculation Theory, and theoretical extensions of interpersonal communication theory as manifest in a theory known as CMM Theory ("The Coordinated Management of Meaning") and the continuing development of a mode of communicological relationship analysis based on CMM Theory; he has additional interests in strategic political communication management and the rhetoric of political campaigns, as well as the more esoteric and artistic use of rhetoric in modern poetry.
