MSU’s Department of Early Childhood, Elementary and Special Education combines a strong mix of class work and field experience to help you become the kind of professional educator needed to meet the challenges of 21st Century classrooms.

As a student in this department you will be working with faculty members who have years of experience working in P-12 schools prior to teaching in higher education. Class sizes are kept small so you can closely interact with your professors and other students in the classroom, providing you with opportunities for individual mentoring to support your growth as an educator.

Middle Grades and Secondary Education

The Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education will provide you with the skills needed to teach in public and private middle and high schools. The department also provides certification programs for professionals in other disciplines who would like to pursue a teaching certificate and a graduate degree (Master of the Art of Teaching) at the same time.

Extensive field experiences accompany all classroom instruction you will receive as a student in our department and you will learn valuable classroom management skills. Students will also have access to two academic advisors.

This department is also the proud home to MSU’s only doctoral program. You can now obtain a Doctorate in Educational Leadership studies with an emphasis in either School Administration or Educational Technology. This practitioner-based doctorate will give you the opportunity to remain in your current job, and engage in rigorous leadership all while conducting research designed to bring about improved student achievement directly in your school.
