Maria is originally from Peru where she completed two years of study in Translation and Interpreting at the Universidad Femenina del Sagrado Corazon in Lima, Peru.  She moved to the U.S. in 2004 where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and French and a Master of Arts in Teaching with an emphasis in Spanish from Morehead State University.  Her passion for teaching grew from the moment she began tutoring for Morehead State University.  During her undergraduate years, she was fortunate to have many opportunities to teach small Spanish courses in the Morehead community for senior citizens as well as giving lessons to the ensemble band at Morehead before their trip to Spain. While working on her Masters, she was employed as a Graduate Assistant  and taught a conversation class.  She then became a full-time teacher at Elliott County High School.  While there she was nominated for the 2009 Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award for which she was selected as first-runner-up.  For the past two years, she worked as an adjunct faculty member for the College of Humanities at the Bluegrass Community College in Lexington, Kentucky. She taught Introduction to the Humanities in Spanish and Introduction to Latino Literature.  She also taught a Spanish course at Morehead State University at the same time.  The impact each one of her college professors and students has had on her life continues to increase her desire to improve as an educator.
