Image - Gold Square   "Morehead State University is a rare place: a dedicated and world-class faculty, supportive peers, the natural beauty of Eastern Kentucky, and plenty of opportunity to grow as a musician and person. I can't imagine a better place to study music!
Dr. Matthew Taylor is Assistant Professor of Saxophone at Morehead State Univeristy. He devotes his life to helping people rediscover the joy of listening, using music as a tool to make sense of the world and connect with others. His provocative concerts often include collaborations with other musicians, artists and dancers, drawing upon all of the arts to tell a story. Although his performances include works from all musical eras, he places special focus on music written by living composers from the past 20 years, and is responsible for many commissions and premieres in the United States and Europe.
He has performed internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and ensemble player, including performances with Miami Beach's New World Symphony with Michael Tilson Thomas, The National Symphony at the John F. Kennedy Center, Great Noise Ensemble, and Mercury Soul with DJ Masonic, and has also backed artists including Patti Austin, Linda Eder, The Temptations, Frank Sinatra, Jr and Quincy Jones, among others.  He was the founding artistic director of the new music ensemble T.E.M.P.O. at the University of Maryland. When he is not on stage, Matt is most fulfilled when he is spending time with students--teaching, giving masterclasses, coaching student ensembles and participating in residencies at universities.
Before accepting his current position at Morehead State University, Matt developed and implemented a music curriculum for at-risk kids in downtown Miami, Florida, where he taught students about Boulez, Steve Reich, and Mozart, and they taught him about Celia Cruz, Drake, and V.I.C.
Taylor has a doctorate from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music, where he was a fellow of the Henry Mancini Institute. His master's degree is from the University of Maryland, and he holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Central Arkansas. He also completed study in saxophone and Contemporary Chamber Music at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Bordeaux in Southwestern France. His principal teachers have included Dale Underwood, Marie-Bernadette Charrier, and Jackie Lamar (saxophone); Whit Sidener, Gary Keller, Troy Roberts, and Curt Sipe (jazz), and Gary Green, Michael Hancock and Ricky Brooks (conducting).
Matt is an artist/clinician for the Conn Selmer Corporation, and performs exclusively on Selmer Paris saxophones. You can find out more about Dr. Taylor at his website, , and more about the saxophone studio at Morehead State at .
