Welcome to Foundational and Graduate Studies in Education

The Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult & Higher Education recently underwent a minor reorganization with the addition of social foundations of education faculty and courses to the department and with that adopted a new, more inclusive (and shorter!) name - the Department of Foundational and Graduate Studies in Education.

The Department of Foundational and Graduate Studies in Education still offers graduate programs in counseling (school and mental health), educational leadership for school administrators, and adult and higher education, plus provides courses in the psychological and social foundations of education for a variety of programs across campus.  The department is also the administrative home for the Adult Education Academy for Professional Development, the Adult Learning Center, and MSU's Clearinghouse for Child Abuse Prevention.  For more information on any of these programs, see the information and links below.

We are always happy to talk with students or prospective students who wish to study in one of our disciplines. Although there is considerable information within the pages of this website, you may wish to meet with the department chair, the program leaders, or a member of the faculty.

Dr. David Barnett, Chair

Adult and Higher Education

Faculty: Dr. Melanie Jones, m.jones@moreheadstate.edu
Dr. Lee Nabb, lw.nabb@moreheadstate.edu

Adult and Higher Education offers an M.A. and Ed.S in Adult and Higher Education. These degrees prepare students for careers as faculty, staff and administrators working with adult learners in community, professional, post-secondary and continuing educational settings. Each degree program has its own admission criteria and process. Consideration for acceptance into a program requires application for a specific degree.

Although students in the adult and higher education M.A. program have the flexibility to create their own 9-hour area of specializations in consultation with, and approval by, their program advisors, pre-approved specializations exist in Business, Community College, and Counseling.

The Adult Education Academy for Professional Development and the Adult Learning Center are both affiliates of this program.

The Department's M.A. in Counseling program (36 hours) prepares candidates for certification as P-12 school counselors. The field-based Practicum for the master's degree is completed in a school setting. The Ed.S. in counseling (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Option) (66 hours) includes the coursework and some of the required supervised counseling hours leading to Kentucky LPCC licensure. A scholarly Applied Project in the field of counseling is required for the Ed.S. degree. Faculty in the counseling program have a strong commitment to service to the schools and the region. The counseling program includes coursework in counseling theory; family, group, and individual counseling; multi-cultural issues; human development; measurement; and research that are combined with field-based practicum experiences to create the merging of theory and practice that is essential to effective professional development.
