Overview
The pre-optometry program is a three year program designed to meet the admission requirements for optometry schools. However, preference is given to applicants who complete a 4-year degree. Students may complete a degree in any program as long as they complete the minimum requirements for admission to the optometry school to which they apply. Students may choose from a variety of majors but most choose either Chemistry or Biology. Pursuing a degree in chemistry will fulfill the requirements for optometry school as well as graduate school in chemistry, pharmacy or medical school. A strong High School background in chemistry, physics, biology and math are essential prior to beginning the pre-optometry program.
Acceptance to optometry school after a 4 year undergraduate degree is completed is largely based on academic performance and experience "shadowing" or working for an optometrist. Students should work closely with the pre-optometry advisor as well as the advisor from their chosen major to ensure that requirements for both programs are met.
More information about a proposed course schedule and a list of MSU courses fulfilling the minimum requirements for optometry school can be found here.
