The discipline of biology is very broad, encompassing subjects from wetland ecology to animal behavior to molecular biology.  A degree in biology reflects this breadth and students in the biology program are required to take courses as broadly separated in content as Ecology, Botany, and Biochemistry.  This is the perfect blend of knowledge for a student wishing to major in the field of biology.  However, it may also be considered overly broad for a student that wishes to focus on a subset of the field of Biology, such as biomedical science.  For this reason, the Department of Biology & Chemistry has developed and implemented a new degree in Biomedical Sciences.  The Biomedical Sciences degree is proposed to better serve the students in the biology program that plan to enter health professional school, students that plan to enter graduate school in the biomedical sciences, and students that plan on enter the workforce in biomedical science.  This includes students in the area of pre-medicine, pre-physician assistant, pre-physical therapy, pre-pharmacy, pre-dentistry, and other pre-health fields.

A cornerstone of the new program is a new year-long course in Human Anatomy & Physiology that will include an in-depth laboratory experience.  The new degree will also have an exciting new capstone course, “Issues in Biomedical Science” that will examine ethical and philosophical dilemmas that health professionals may encounter during their careers.  The expected outcome of the new degree is that our students will be better prepared for careers in the health field and biomedical research.  For more information contact Dr. Dennis (d.dennis@moreheadstate) or Dr. DeMoss (d.demoss@moreheadstate.edu).
