Dr. Gearner to Participate in National Bioinformatics Workshop

Dr. Geoff Gearner, Professor of Biology, has been selected
to participate in a workshop titled, “Incorporating Bioinformatics Research in
Undergraduate Education” sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology and
Department of Energy’s Joint Genome Institute. The workshop will be held
in Washington DC on 9 - 12 March 2011. The bioinformatics-themed
workshop will train undergraduate STEM faculty on the understanding,
interpretation, and use of molecular sequence information in addressing
biological problems. The Institute utilizes the analysis of microbial
genome sequence data and molecular structures as a framework for the
development of laboratory activities and research projects for undergraduate
students. Dr. Gearner will develop and incorporate a suite of
bioinformatics activities into the Principles of Microbiology course.
Additionally, Dr. Gearner will explore the use of bioinformatics tools in
addressing research questions as they relate to his ongoing projects
investigating the microbiology of watersheds.
