Department of Agricultural Sciences

Whether you grew up on a farm or in the city, Morehead State University’s Agricultural Sciences Department offers you the opportunity to learn from experienced, skilled faculty members in dynamic and spacious facilities as you prepare for a broad range of careers in agricultural sciences.
MSU offers 11 agricultural science degree programs in a small classroom environment, ensuring you’ll receive the support and personal attention you need to achieve your academic goals. At MSU, you’ll gain a combination of science-based classroom knowledge and hands-on practical skills with personal, one-on-one guidance from faculty members.
The 325-acre Derrickson Agricultural Complex and the 250-acre Browning Orchard in neighboring Fleming County will give you hands-on, real-world experience as you earn your degree under the close guidance of the faculty. Regardless of your chosen specialization, you will gain working experience in many facets of agriculture, including:
• Raising cattle, swine and sheep
• Equine breeding and boarding
• Vegetable and grain production
• Freshwater shrimp and Tilapia production

You are much more than a number at MSU. The Department of Agricultural Sciences boasts a 18:1 student ratio, meaning you’ll receive personal, focused attention from faculty members.  You'll also have the chance to work side-by-side with faculty members who are conducting groundbreaking research through MSU's Undergraduate Research Fellowship program. You will have the opportunity to present your research at professional conferences and to have it published in undergraduate research journals.

Setting Yourself Apart

Once you graduate from MSU, you will have a quality degree from a quality institution, but so will many others who are looking for jobs. In order to succeed, you need to set yourself apart, and the Department of Agricultural Sciences at MSU will help you do just that. MSU offers a combination of course work, hands-on experiential learning opportunities, internships and co-ops, along with opportunities to learn valuable leadership skills through involvement in a number of student organizations. You will receive guidance from faculty members and advisors who are dedicated to your success. Not only will they help you select classes, but they will also help you find internship and scholarship opportunities. As you near the end of your studies, faculty members can provide references for jobs and internships. The knowledge, skills, guidance and personal, one-on-one attention you’ll receive at MSU will give you an advantage as you enter an increasingly competitive job market.

Veterinary Technology Program

MSU offers two-year and four-year degrees in Veterinary Technology, a program offered at few other universities in the region. The programs are accredited by the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA), and the University has partnerships with several veterinarians in the region to help you with job placement after you graduate. While you work toward your degree, you will receive hands-on experience in fully-functional small animal and equine clinics, located at the Derrickson Agricultural Complex.

Feeding Their Fellow Students

The Derrickson Agricultural Complex not only serves MSU agricultural sciences students, but the entire student body as well, thanks to a partnership with Aramark Food Services and the Kentucky Proud program. Through the Farm to Campus initiative, the work done by students provides fruits, vegetables, fish and some meats to campus dining facilities, offering a farm-to-table dining experience you just can't get at most other universities. Items produced at the farm are also available for sale to the general public throughout the year.
